SunStruck Growers is a small Canadian, family run nursery that specializes in the genus hosta. The business is run by Walter and Linda Kruk. I do all the plant work which includes the selection and ordering of the hostas, transplanting, and nurturing of the plants. My husband, Walter, takes care of the greenhouse and its maintenance. He also helps with the watering and fertilizing of the hostas. And, last but not least, our ‘guard dogs’, Destini and Cheyenne. Destini is a red and tan Doberman (Magik’s half sister) and Cheyenne is a tri-color border collie. They patrol the grounds and keep the deer and rabbits away from the greenhouse. They also do a great job picking and eating my tomatoes!
The operation started out as a result of my love of plants. It didn’t matter what kind of plant...well, my obsession does stop with weeds! I just love to watch tiny little seeds sprout, and grow into beautiful plants. One of my favorite plants was the hosta. My problem was that I could never find anything different. Granted, every year, the major nurseries would bring in a couple of different varieties but I could never find the varieties shown in the gardening magazines. At first I checked the web, and ordered

some hostas that way. The first year or two was great, the plants came bare root, were a nice size, and did very well. After that, the plants became smaller and smaller. When I lost 50% of them the first winter, I was not too pleased and thought there had to be a better way. At the time, I knew very little about tissue cultured hosta. After some checking on the internet, I realized I had been sent tissue culture plants that had not been finished by my supplier. So, now I bring tissue culture liners to our nursery, baby them for at least one year, over winter them and then put them up for adoption.
Although, we cannot guarantee our hostas, we feel that when they leave our premises, that they are healthy vibrant plants. And, with a little TLC they will flourish.
If you have any questions regarding our nursery or hostas in general, please feel free to contact us by either telephone or email.
