Landscaping with Hostas

¨ Group several small and miniature hostas in a bed  or pot of their own.

¨ Raise a bed with landscape timbers or stone bringing the plants closer to hand level.

¨ Try mulch or small colored gravel or larger river rock to add motion to the bed.

¨  Even consider growing dwarf conifers or tiny perennials with your baby hostas to add color and texture.

¨ Use rocks as specimens in the hosta garden. Plant a large hosta next to a large rock and allow the hosta leaves to cascade over a corner of the rock to soften the contrast.  Then plant a small hosta in front of the rock, giving you the classic grouping of three. Plant  a small single hosta beside and slightly behind the rock for a similar effect.

¨ Use curved lines in your beds. A curved line tends to make the eye follow it. So, for an enticing treat,  plant a spectacular specimen hosta at the end of the curve. Or, plant a border of small green or gold hostas along the curve.

¨ Try planting three plants of the same hosta about one foot apart in a triangle to create an impressive clump instantly. As the hostas mature, two of the clumps may be moved to another location

¨ Add whimsical touches with frogs, fairies, or artwork to accent your hostas

¨ Frame water features...ponds and fountains with hostas Hostas look fabulous with water and the plants themselves enjoy the extra humidity.

Hopefully the pictures used in this site will give you ideas for your own hosta garden.

Have a great hosta year!
